OPEN SOURCE CODE: The Bellingcat group is at the forefront of a much-needed grassroots movement, revealing the production and spread of fake news.

Eliot Higgins was 36 years old and had recently
lost his office job when in 2014 he abruptly entered the global news scene.
He described himself as "terribly nerdy" and shy of people, engaged a lot
online games and spent most of the time at the computer – when he did not take
of his child, as a stay-at-home dad. His lifestyle and behavior were
in other words the opposite of the stereotype of a macho daredevil as we usually are
connects with war reporters. But his sudden presence as one
journalistic power, says a lot about the nature of modern conflicts and
information warfare.

In our heavily mediated and image-saturated world, we are now just as likely to search for evidence of what is happening in crisis areas, including what is posted online, such as first-hand eyewitness accounts in social media. Higgins is the founder of the Bellingcat organization, which runs an open source website. The goal is to find the truth about events in areas where reliable media sources are absent, as well as to fact-check statements by politicians by reviewing the extensive flow of digital footprints.

The superior impact force of the belling cat method is alarming.

The independent organization – named after the fable of the mice that want to attach a bell around the cat's neck to harmless it – has grown into a network of ten core members who communicate online from their respective homes in Syria, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. . And this is the Dutch filmmaker Hans Pool's documentary Bellingcat: Truth in a Post-Truth. . .
