Stop the wars – strengthen international law

FRED / Declaration of Peace, adopted by acclamation during the Lay Down Your Arms conference on February 9, 2025 at the House of Literature in Oslo.

Gaza is the scene of a live genocide that undermines our collective humanity. If urgent action is not taken, it will also become the graveyard of international law. The preservation of human rights and international law is fundamental to a peaceful world community.

Today we are gathered here to show solidarity with the Palestinians and to oppose the settler-colonial project in the historic PalestineWe are also here to save our collective humanity by reviving our shared commitment to international law.

The genocide

In the name of humanity, we demand the immediate implementation of concrete measures to bring a resolute end to the genocide in Gaza and Israel's annexation of the West Bank and Jerusalem.

The International Court of Justice (#ICJ) has issued a final ruling that the Israeli occupation of Palestine is illegal. We recognize the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland. We support Palestinian self-determination. We strongly oppose all plans to displace the indigenous Palestinian population.

It is the military-industrial complex and the guardians of colonialism that profit from perpetual war and oppression.

We know that time and again it is the military-industrial complex and the guardians of colonialism that profit from perpetual war and oppression. But what is particularly diabolical about the settler-colonial occupation of Palestine is that many of those who facilitate and enable this genocide of the Palestinians are the same ones who created the settler-colonial state of Israel using land stolen from the Palestinians – to atone for Europe’s crimes during the Holocaust. These are so-called rule of law states that support and enable genocide, while at the same time they silence any criticism of their complicity in this new holocaust in Palestine.

Despite the courage of Palestinian journalists who continue to risk their lives to document the genocide, we know that Western media coverage of the genocide has been largely one-sided and weak. We urge all people to demand accountability from their own governments and to pressure the media to hold those in power accountable.

We urge the international community to take seriously the calls from Palestine to boycott, divest from, and sanction those associated with the ongoing genocide.

Militarization

Now it is time for you too FN takes responsibility for its role in the creation of Israel.

The United Nations established Israel 77 years ago, but to this day Israel shamelessly violates international law and consistently ignores its obligations as a UN member. In light of the grave and systematic crimes against humanity, we call on the UN and the international community to suspend Israel's rights and privileges in the UN and other international institutions. As long as Israel systematically violates its international obligations, the country should be excluded. This is an important deterrent and safeguards international law.

The entire world is being militarized on a scale we have never seen before. The United States and NATO establishes military bases all over the world, both overtly and covertly, without any meaningful public debate or consent. We call on the population to wake up and actively oppose this militarization, which does not ensure deterrence or national security, but instead escalates global tensions and triggers war.

We salute all medical, legal and other humanitarian organizations, such as UNRWA and all professionals working in various fields inside and outside Palestine to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.

A people's court

We hereby take the initiative for a people's court that will systematically map the atrocities that have taken place in Gaza and the West Bank over the past year and a half, convict those responsible and hold them accountable for their crimes.

Lies, luxury and endless war

CORRUPTION: Alexis Bloom's gripping exposé of the web of lies that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has apparently woven to avoid corruption charges shows how one man's fear of prison has led to war and instability in the Middle East. It's about a man whose ego has grown to the point where he sees himself as a kind of King David figure leading the Jewish people to salvation.

Thousands are considered 'fifth columnists'

SURVEILLANCE: In September 1973, the commander, grenadiers and privates of one of the Norwegian Armed Forces squadrons in Northern Norway were handed five different documents by the camp's security officer. The papers were marked "Internal note" and included, among other things, a list of 17 different organizations and 3 magazines that allegedly contained potential 'fifth columnists'. The Women's Front, the Cultural Front, the Vietnam Solidarity Committee, the Student Union Front, the Palestine Committee, the Campaign for Norway Out of NATO, the Traffic Action and 'A Place to Be' are among the organizations mentioned.

Working for peace

GAZA: The conflict in Gaza is horrific for all innocent people. But what enables an Israeli family to muster the political will and pressure to have their daughter released within two months, while thousands of Palestinians who were arrested and imprisoned without charge or trial during the war remain voiceless?

The postmodern and houses of worship

ARCHITECTURE: Sacred Modernity contains 139 images of modern churches. One could perhaps say that the book reflects the barren and displaced soul of humanity, the new society of stunned strangers…

Is liberal democracy dead?

POWER:Today's autocratic regimes have turned what was once a domestic policy into a foreign policy doctrine. Autocracy Inc. is brilliant and terrifying from Anne Applebaum.

POLITICAL SATIRE: We watch the TV series that analyzes the courage of press cartoonists and the relevance of their work in the democratic struggle and in the defense of the rights of individuals and especially women.

Seeds are politics and big business

FOOD: The main theme of this film is the hybridization of seeds, using the tomato plant as an example. The point of hybridizing seeds is increased yield and increased profits. The companies behind it are Bayer (Monsanto), Corteva (formerly DuPont) and Syngenta.

When propaganda took over the schools

RUSSIA: How a small-town teaching assistant became a whistleblower about the grim reality of war propaganda.

Hate and collapse in the United States

RESISTANCE: We try to analyze President Trump as a late-capitalist fascist whose political program is based on racial exclusion, xenophobia, transphobia, misogyny and a vision of national rebirth. This in a country where more than 30 people are killed by firearms every year, an average of over 000 victims a day. But also: we see a return to political crime to suppress protests. This is the case everywhere today, but besides the US it is especially visible in Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the Emirates and Iran.

The seduction of apocalyptic revelation

FUTURE: Political systems and new technologies have given us a sense that the promises of the future have faded. Would it be a tragedy if there were no more humans on the planet?

"From sunrise to sunset, the carpenters work on coffins."

POETRY: Latin America is in many ways an extension of Europe, with widespread poverty. Cities, human destinies, misfortune, love, everything seems bigger in Latin America.

What can we learn from silence?

PSYCHOLOGY: What makes Pico Iyer's book different from other descriptions of spiritual breaks from a hectic life is that his focus is not on what he has left behind, but on what he is striving towards.
