Over 500 in NATO rebellion

Over 500 people had signed during the call for the new NATO when the campaign was presented on Thursday. Among them are the tops of 15 trade unions and parliamentary representatives from several parties.

With a number of celebrity names from politics, culture and social life at the forefront, the campaign hopes to bring to life a debate about NATO's new strategic concept. At the forefront is the Nobel Committee leader Francis Sejerstedt, the Center Party's deputy leader Åse Grønlien Østmo, Professor Thomas Hylland Eriksen, the leader of the Norwegian Transport Workers' Association Per Østvold and former Left leader Gunnar Garbo.

Association Executives

But Østvold is not alone among the union leaders in the trade union movement. Sture Arntzen in Trade and Office, Jan Davidsen in the Municipal Association, Turid Lilleheie in the Public Service Team and Finn Erik Thoresen in Grafisk are among the LO federal leaders who "do not want NATO as a self-proclaimed world police", as the call states.

The head of the Health and Social Association Tove Stangnes and the Teachers' Union Helga Hjetland have also signed, together with other union leaders and local union representatives in the trade union movement.

The initiators of the call, including author Vigdis Hjorth, have invested heavily in getting cultural figures on the pitch in the fight against NATO's "out of area" strategy. Kjell Askildsen, Kjetil Bjørnstad, Jon Fosse, Klaus Hagerup, Inger-Elisabeth Hansen, Liv Køltsow, Thorvald Steen and Fredrik Fasting Torgersen are among those on the list.

Several lots

Politically, the appeal gathers support not only from the bulk of the SV's governing bodies, but also from other party politicians. Not least, it is worth noting that Deputy Speaker Åse Grønlien Østmo is at the forefront of the call, and has with him Deputy Representative Jon Dale, Secretary General Kjell Dahle and Center Youth Judge Sigbjørn Gjelsvik.

The Labor Party and the AUF are also represented, including with parliamentary representative Trond Giske, five central board members of the AUF and the chair and deputy chair of the Social Democratic Student Union.

Kristin and Erik alone

Kristin Halvorsen and Erik Solheim are the only party leaders in SF's and SV's history who do not join the call for new NATO.

All current party leaders – Finn Gustavsen, Stein Ørnhøi, Berit Ås, Berge Furre and Theo Koritzinsky – have put their names on the list, in addition to SV queen and former parliamentary leader Hanna Kvanmo.

A minority of four in SV's parliamentary group joins the appeal, while an almost unified central board does the same. Among the signatories to the petition are also several people who supported NATO's bombing of Rest-Yugoslavia, among them parliamentary representative Karin Andersen and Oslo SV's Kari Pahle.
