Peace Tax?

We must aim higher for peace. The goal must be to make war illegal.

(THIS ARTICLE IS MACHINE TRANSLATED by Google from Norwegian)

War in the 1800th century took place mainly man against man, and was limited to the ground. War in 2016 is high-tech – an impersonal ragnarok extended to air and even further. Let me render a little historical Happening on war power versus peace power:

In 2000, a private bill (doc. No. 8: 85 (1999 – 2000), to be precise) was presented to the Storting, thanks to Hallgeir Langeland from SV. Briefly, the Storting was asked to enact a law on updating the Military Refusal Act, adapted to today's realities. The law would then give people the opportunity to refuse to support war financially. As it is now, we are all doing just that, ie supporting warfare – including through tax collection. Could the study of the proposal have allowed for a transfer of "war tax" to "peace tax"? The bill was to modernize the then and current military denial law, to give people the right to refuse to pay for war.

Displaced. The proposal was submitted to the Finance Committee. The chairman of the committee was Siv Jensen. The committee unanimously agreed not to recommend the proposal, with one exception – SV's Øystein Djupedal's vote. Børge Brende had a great responsibility for the further treatment. Brende was honest enough to privately admit later that the case was given low priority and incompletely dealt with.

When the Storting was to discuss the matter further, Hallgeir Langeland – who had initially made the proposal – was alone in defending it. Besides this, there was unfortunately lukewarm support from the rest of the SV. Ridicule and displacement from other parties took place in various negotiating rooms. Most had nothing to do with real politics.

A just earth. Where do Siv Jensen and Børge Brende lead us now? Everyone can see how dangerous the current situation is. Even in democratic countries, generals exercise much power. And we have Syrian generals, Russian, Turkish, Egyptian, Israeli, Pakistani, ad infinitum. The world does not have time for investigations now. It has to be traded! There is a huge need for international law that not only makes nuclear weapons and warplanes illegal – the goal must be to do the war itself illegal. Diverse peace organizations around the world are working for this and other non-violent action and solution attempts. What needs to be done? Can military institutions, peace institutions as well as political and spiritual leaders come together with us in little Norway to work for other opportunities? Show the way? See that prestige, honor and money are subordinate matters? Ignorance, greed, lies, suspicion and hatred are our enemies. Where there is war, no other business can thrive. We, the people, want a livable and just land!

Love is the mother and father of peace. That is the key that must be used.
