The question of technique

Things are starting to behave. But the fact that things around us are getting smarter does not necessarily mean that we ourselves are getting smarter, quite the contrary.

A manifesto for democracy and human rights

REBEL: Joshua Wong started a protest movement against the Chinese authorities, but was refused to stand for election in Hong Kong.

The age of panic

KATE stanza:  We humans have lost control of the development we have initiated. The catastrophe is a warning that comes too late, and the elites make themselves unresponsive to the danger signals. Can we avoid panicky escape from the common problems?

The void after father

Fathers missed: Sibylle Lacan, daughter of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, tells of a sore father relationship in this short but strong memoir.

The poet and thinker are individually orchids

cultural history: Celan wanted Heidegger to apologize for supporting Adolf Hitler. With such thinkers, how can they contribute to a society at par with human potential?

Recommended literature this summer

Book tips MODERN TIMES's critics and editors recommend books for the summer holidays.

The borderland is militarized

NECRO STATE CITIZENSHIP: Much has been made of Trump's "beautiful" wall, but the borderland between the United States and its neighbor to the south has been militarized and cut up by fences and walls for more than a decade.

"What we want to say 'yes' to."

BOOK: Photographer Kajsa Gullberg is a Socrates light in the sex club. The photographs from the club are blurred and reddish.

Raw, naked and masculine

RACISM? Before, it was the Baroque who seduced Mbembe, now it's brutalism – used as an analytical breakthrough to understand Africa and its relationship to Europe.

«The disciplinary community was born out of the great plague epidemics»

CONTROL: Today, millions of racialized bodies have become redundant in relation to capital's metabolism and enrolled in a digitally mediated nexus of exclusion, control, and destruction technologies. MODERN TIMES here goes into the theme via author Achille Mbembe in three articles.

Hatred is an integral part of American popular culture

USA: American religious scientist puts his finger on the convulsive attempts of the liberalist society to cover up the injustices of the past.

New energy production must be decarbonised, decentralized and digitized

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: The climate crisis is an energy crisis. Today, the environmental movement must be careful not to support capitalist exploitation through well-intentioned green innovations.

Together for life

SYMBIOSIS: We must think differently about both man and computer. Their being is more entangled than we think, and both change and adapt to each other.

Violence is politicized, and politics becomes violence

VIOLENCE IN THEORY AND PRACTICE: The world is violent. Do we get bogged down by the rhetoric of violence?

Flashy Norwegian-supported consumption in Africa

CONSUMPTION AND CORRUPTION: We haven't heard much about Luanda Leaks in Norway. Perhaps because it is embarrassing that Statoil paid NOK 420 million to a non-existent research center owned by Angola's state oil company Sonangol, where Isabel dos Santos was the director until she was fired in November 2017?

How capitalist alienation has assumed form

MEDIA fellowship: An analysis of how human relationships, including language, have been staged. Here in a cool elegance, what Debord himself called "the style of negation."
